Tom Spain
Tuba
James Bond Collection
(Monte Norman et al., arr. by Goff Richards)

Tom Spain is from Morristown, N.J. Played Sousaphone in the high school band.
Forty years later he took up the tuba and signed up with a local music teacher.
Produced a film for PBS about John Philip Sousa in 1991 (day job) and learned that the tuba is not just an easy, schlumphy instrument , but an essential part of a band’s character and should be played well.
And that’s not easy.
This humbling challenge persists to this day.
Tom plays in the Blawenburg Band, The Raritan Valley Band and the Virginia Grand Military Band and anywhere he can find an empty chair in the back row.
